Flea and Tick Service

Carpets, tile, floor rugs and even joints between wood flooring can become a home for fleas. Fleas can also find a home in furniture cushions and pet pillows. Metro Guard has the expertise to eliminate fleas and tick from your home or business. Pre-adult fleas can make up as much as 99% of a flea population. It is important to control not just the adult fleas, but all four stages of a flea infestation. Metro Guard uses high quality products that impact fleas and ticks in all stages. We apply growth regulators to keep pre-adult fleas from maturing and breeding. Our products can control fleas or ticks for up to seven months. Treating is a simple process but it requires the customer’s help in a few areas before service:
  1. Pets must be treated for fleas and kept away during treatment (many customers take their pets to be dipped during the time they need to leave the structure – see number 6 below)
  2. Infested areas must be cleared (even under beds)
  3. Vacuum all rugs and mop all floors – seal and dispose of the vacuum bag outside – this is a very important step
  4. Mow the yard if the outside is to be treated
  5. Show us where your pets rest or where the infestation is the worst
  6. Prepare to leave after the structure is treated for 2-4 hours
  7. Limit traffic over treated areas for 24 hours
After the service is completed these instructions should be followed:
  1. Give the insecticide time to work – it is commons to see fleas up to 3 weeks after service as pupae emerge from the protective cocoons
Vacuum daily (if possible) to stimulate the emergence of the pupae
  2. so they become exposed to insecticide. The vacuum noise and vibration will stimulate the pupae to emerge.
  3. Fleas exposed to the insecticide may still bite while the product is affecting them. Biting fleas does not always mean the treatment needs to be re-done.
Fleas
Flea is the common name for a small wingless insect. Fleas are external parasites, living by hematophagy off the blood of mammals and birds.

In most cases, fleas are just a nuisance to their hosts, but some people and some animals suffer allergic reactions to flea saliva resulting in rashes.

Flea bites generally result in the formation of a slightly-raised swollen itching spot with a single puncture point at the center.
Fleas
Fleas can also lead to hair loss as a result of frequent scratching and biting by the animal, and can cause anemia in extreme cases.
To deal with a home infestation one needs to break the life cycle of the fleas and kill off the breeding age individuals which will otherwise produce a new generation within about 10-18 days.
Ticks
Ticks
Ticks are second only to mosquitoes as vectors of human disease, both infectious and toxic.

Hard ticks can transmit human diseases such as relapsing fever, Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, equine encephalitis, Colorado tick fever, and several forms of ehrlichiosis.

Ticks are often found in tall grass, where they will rest themselves at the tip of a blade so as to attach themselves to a passing animal or human.
It is a common misconception that the tick can jump from the plant onto the host. Physical contact is the only method of transportation for ticks. They will generally drop off of the animal when full, but this may take several days. Ticks contain a structure in their mouth area that allows them to anchor themselves firmly in place while sucking blood. Pulling a tick out forcefully may squeeze contents of the tick back into the bite and often leaves the mouthpiece behind, which may result in infection.
Where Bugs Vacation During the Winter:
Many bugs, like people, seek a safe warm place during the winter months. A comment we often hear from folks is that pest control is not needed in winter months because the cold weather "kills" them. While this may be true in some respects, we do like to point out that the ones that find harborage in your home are still alive.

There are so many different insects common to our area that we could not cover the effects of winter on each. Suffice it to say however, that pest control is an ongoing process. The goal is to keep the bugs from entering your home. This is done by creating barriers both inside the home and out. By "skipping" a season, you are allowing the barrier to breakdown which can allow insects into the home.

After various bugs are in your home they begin breeding and foraging. All this could lead to a major problem vs. a problem that could be solved with a less expensive preventative service such as the General Pest Treatment Please feel free to call or Email our office if you have any questions.
